Online Sharing Session: Care and Rehabilitation for Hospital Discharged Dementia Patients

Following the success of phase one of the Jockey Club Discharge Support and Rehabilitation Programme, JCCPA has received another donation from the Jockey Club Charities Trust to embark on phase two of the programme. The Jockey Club Discharge Support and Rehabilitation Programme aims to help people with dementia to rehabilitate and adapt to home life after hospitalisation. The programme comprises three plans to meet the different needs of those with dementia.

The online sharing session titled “Care and Rehabilitation for Hospital Discharged Dementia Patients” was successfully completed on 7 and 14 December, with over 50 caregivers in attendance, Our senior physiotherapists and registered social workers shared practical care techniques and knowledge specifically for dementia patients recently discharged from the hospital.

Through this session, we aimed to increase understanding of the specialized rehabilitation program for dementia patients and the various professional interventions available to assist elderly individuals transitioning from hospital to home.

JCCPA Christmas Party

Every festive season, our center hosts various exciting activities for our service users. This year, we also held a celebration for Christmas. Through quiz games, singing Christmas carols, and creating handmade Christmas lanterns, our service users were able to enjoy the festive atmosphere while training their sensory and cognitive abilities. In addition to a festive meal, our staff dressed up as Santa Claus to distribute thoughtfully prepared Christmas gifts, allowing our elderly to have an unforgettable Christmas experience in advance.

Booth at the “Light Rail and Bus Safety Campaign for the Elderly” Ceremony

To raise awareness among the public regarding cognitive health for themselves and their elderly relatives, our center participated in the “Light Rail and Bus Safety Campaign for the Elderly” booth on 3 December. We distributed brochures on dementia knowledge to over 300 seniors in Tuen Mun and engaged them with games to explain six key cognitive functions. We express our gratitude to MTR for inviting us to exhibit, allowing us to educate seniors about dementia. Meanwhile, we appreciate the MTR’s gift of a calligraphy screen “Benefiting the Community” as a keepsake.

50+ Service Expo

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Jockey Club Cadenza Hub and the 50+ Service Expo is one of the celebratory activities. To promote the concept of “Active Ageing” among those aged 50 and above, our center collaborated with the Jockey Club to hold the 50+ Service Expo on 12 December at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

At the expo, we introduced the Jockey Club “Brain Health” Dementia Screening and Community Support Project, providing vision and hearing health tests on-site, attracting over 100 seniors to participate and learn more. We would also like to thank the volunteer team from KMB for their assistance in explaining the Jockey Club “Brain Health” Dementia Screening and Community Support Project and helping with the tests, ensuring the event ran smoothly.

EC Screen Day

The first EC Screen Day was successfully held on 14 December. Over 40 seniors attended to undergo cognitive testing and participated in a talk on dementia knowledge, emphasizing the importance of brain health. We regularly organize various courses for people with dementia and their family caregivers. We provide effective solutions and support tailored to the needs and challenges faced by families, aiming to alleviate the stress experienced by caregivers and foster mutual understanding.  We would also like to thank the volunteer team from KMB for their assistance in EC Screen for the elderly.

Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing Flagship Training Course: Three-Day Seminar on Understanding the Behaviors and Expressions of Dementia Patients in Hong Kong

The three-day seminar “Understanding the Distressed Behaviour of People with Dementia in Hong Kong” successfully concluded last Friday. We are very grateful for the support from all sectors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the speakers who took time out of their busy schedules to present. They explored the reasons behind the behaviors of people with dementia and care strategies from a “person-centered” and various professional perspective, and interpreted different assessment tools. This allowed professionals to gain a deeper understanding of the behaviors of people with dementia and to consider the perspectives of both the individuals with dementia and their caregivers when formulating care strategies.

We would like to thank the following speakers for their valuable contribution (in no particular order):

  • Prof. Dawn Brooker MBE, Emeritus Professor and former Director of the University of Worcester Association for Dementia
  • Prof. Timothy Kwok, S.H. Ho Professor of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Prof. Allen Lee, Associate Professor (Clinical), Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Dr. Kenny Chui, Registered Social Worker, Deputy General Manager, Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing
  • Mr. Franco Cheng, Registered Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, The University of Hong Kong
  • Ms. Natalie Lai, Senior Occupational Therapist, Castle Peak Hospital
  • Ms. Yasmin Li, Music Therapist, Board Certified, Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing
  • Mr. Kingsley Pun, Nursing Officer, Case Manager, Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing

The response to this seminar was very enthusiastic, with over 20 professionals participating. Participants not only gained insights from various local scholars and professionals but also had the opportunity to interact with foreign speakers, learning about how dementia is understood and viewed abroad, which was highly beneficial.

JCCPA frequently organizes professional training courses for industry workers serving people with dementia. By combining theoretical knowledge of dementia, accumulated service experience and research results. These courses aim to enhance the understanding of dementia among industry professionals, helping to improve care skills and service levels.

New Season of Courses on the EDU Platform Launches

In June 2023, we launched the first comprehensive online learning platform for dementia in Hong Kong: EDU. The platform offers various courses that share dementia knowledge and caregiving skills in a lively, engaging, and easy-to-understand manner through videos and interactions. Users can learn about dementia knowledge flexibly and independently at any time and place. Each course provides notes to help users grasp key points and review caregiving essentials.

Currently, the platform has launched a new season of courses, including “How to communicate with people with dementia” for caregivers. Interested individuals can learn more and enroll through the following website: https://edu.jccpa.org.hk/course/
