24th anniversary of the establishment of JCCPA

June 24 marks the 24th anniversary of JCCPA’s establishment. To mark this special occasion, our team has dedicated efforts to create a beautifully decorated environment, filled with elements of reality orientation and sensory stimulation. For example, we invited our elderly members to make red eggs together, which is a symbolic traditional Chinese culture for birthday celebrations. Additionally, we encouraged them to express their creativity through birthday-themed artworks. Our ambassador, Bo Bo, took photos with the elderly members to create a memory of celebrations. As we eagerly approach our 25th anniversary, we are diligently preparing a series of meaningful activities that promise to be both memorable and significant. We invite you to stay tuned and join us in these upcoming celebrations.

Dragon Boat Festival Event

During the Dragon Boat Festival, we organized a festive activity on making rice dumplings for the elder members. Many of our elderly members had prior experience making rice dumplings when they were young, so they shared their expertise with each other as well as our colleagues while preparing the ingredients. This activity not only evokes memories of the Dragon Boat Festival among the elder members but also serves as a reminder of the festival. Moreover, the process of making rice dumplings helps to train their cognitive abilities, eye-hand coordination, and spatial processing skills. Finally, the participants enjoyed their handmade rice dumplings and experienced the joyous atmosphere of the Dragon Boat Festival.

「活腦護老Power Up」Educational exhibition and talk

In the week of 24 June, a 5-day dementia educational exhibition was held at Immaculate Heart Of Mary School. On the 28 June , an educational talk on dementia and brain health was conducted for 120 students. The students were very enthusiastic and actively participated in the exhibition as well as the talk by raising their hands to answer questions. Through a simplified approach, we shared dementia knowledge, the importance of brain health and the four elements of brain care with students. It is expected that the students will be able to develop an understanding and awareness of brain health from a young age, and learn to care for and support people with dementia, thus building a dementia-friendly community together.

Training Courses for Dementia Care

With the generous support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant, JCCPA continues to organise the training programme for caregivers.

The sharing session on “End-of-life care” was successfully conducted by Dr Jenny Lee, Consultant, Department of Medicine and Deputy Hospital Chief Executive, Tai Po Hospital on 15 June. She shared with more than 260 family caregivers the physical changes of people with dementia at different stages and the essential care guidelines for each stage. She also shared her knowledge about Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and offered guidance on preparing for end-of-life care. Additionally, Dr Lee addressed various enquiries from caregivers in detail. For example, the applicability of ACP on ambulances, gives caregivers a better understanding of how to prepare for end-of-life care.

Registration for the caregiver training course in July 2024 is now open. The July course “Intensive Training I” and “Intensive Training II” will be held on 13 July (Saturday) at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Our registered social worker, Ms Ally Lam will introduce some basic knowledge of dementia and tactics for taking care of people with dementia in different aspects. The training course will be in the form of a video and the Q&A session will be livestreamed. Please visit the following website to register: https://www.jccpa.org.hk/s/202407-CGTR
