Christmas Parties
Our daycare service users celebrated Christmas together. Apart from enjoying the Christmas meals and gifts, our service users learned how to make a Herbarium. Everyone had created their unique decoration by picking and putting their favourite flowers and colours into a lightbulb. During the party, participants were also served special drinks prepared by themselves. We spent a pleasant afternoon together; you can see their smiles even behind the masks!
Brain Training Card Games
Under the pandemic, the elderly with dementia and their caregivers may need to keep staying at home. Besides doing physical exercises, are there any brain training activities that the elderly and caregivers can do at home to kill time?
Mr. Andrew Lau, a Registered Social Worker of JCCPA, demonstrated three card games that caregivers can play with the elderly. Andrew has also shared his tips on leading the games in the videos.

Family Caregivers Training Course
Last but not least, two modules of “Family Caregivers Training (New Series)” were conducted on 19 December.
Our Registered Nurse, Ms. Bonnie Li, and Training Consultant, Mr. Andrew Lau, shared with the family caregivers about the knowledge of commonly used drugs for people with dementia, nursing skills for pressure sore and urinary tract infection, community resources, and family support for people with dementia, etc.
Bonnie and Andrew responded and advised the caregivers according to their caring cases and how to overcome various challenges when caring for people with dementia. The training was conducted in a pleasant atmosphere; participants raised questions and responded very enthusiastically. We sincerely hope the practice could help them alleviate their difficulties and pressures. The two pieces of training attracted a total of about 140 participants.
Jockey Club Discharge Support and Rehabilitation Programme
Kwok-Choi, one of our service users, suffered from emotional instability, and could not sleep well. He cried frequently and did not want to stay at home. His family was frustrated; thus, they arranged Kwok-Choi to receive inpatient treatment. When Kwok-Choi was in the hospital, his family learned of the Jockey Club Discharge Support and Rehabilitation Programme; and enroll Kwok-Choi in the Programme.
In the beginning, Kwok-Choi still felt confused and cried sometimes. Our staff tried to assign him with some job duties; Kwok-Choi’s condition improved when his time was being occupied. It is observed that Kwok-Choi is interested in carrying out maintenance works, our staff assigned him with some safe and straightforward maintenance tasks, to let him gain a sense of accomplishment, which helped stabilise his emotions. In communicating with and receiving training from “co-workers”, Kwok-Choi’s expressing ability has been improved, and he can clearly express his opinion. Moreover, as Kwok-Choi’s daytime was filled with various meaningful activities, he could rest well at night. As a result, he became more energetic in the day, and his appetite improved.
Kwok-Choi has now returned home and reunites with his family. For thanking the staff of JCCPA for their good care, Kwok-Choi and his family members specially sent us a “Thank You” card and snacks. We wish Kwok-Choi and his family good health and happiness always!
