Free Screening of “The Father”

Thanks to the generous from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, to provide 10,000 free screening tickets of the Academy Award – winning film “The Father” in NowE App to local citizens during World Alzheimer’s Month (September). “The Father” was widely acclaimed for its accurate and empathetic depiction of dementia, we hoped that the citizens would gain a better understanding of dementia, the inner world of people living with dementia, and the needs of their caregivers. The audiences expressed that the film was worth-watching and greatly improved on the understanding of dementia.

Mooncake Workshop

The event started with telling traditional myths and stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Then, the participants got a chance to taste and touch the seasonal fruits which provided much sensory stimulation to the participants. Last but not least, they also solved lantern riddles with our staff.

How could the Mid-Autumn Festival be without mooncakes? The theme this year was ‘snowy mooncakes DIY’. The elder members had to communicate and cooperate during the DIY workshop while much social interactions were made. Some of them were responsible for kneading the dough and others were responsible for assembling the dough and the fillings. All the mooncakes were finished by the participants. Finally, they even packaged the mooncakes and shared with their family when they backed home.

Jockey Club Caring Communities for Dementia Campaign

In this campaign, we have developed the guarding-tooth device, using the bluetooth and the crowd-sourcing technology, to assist caregivers to search for the people with dementia when they get lost.

In order to facilitate the caregivers to apply for the “guarding-tooth” device as well as to reach a wider population of “dementia angels”, JCCPA and St. James’ Settlement continued to travel across the city by our promotion truck in September. The truck traveled to 24 locations. The general public actively participated in various activities such as games and the roadshow which enhanced their understanding on dementia. The caregivers also expressed that it was convenient to pick up the guarding-tooth device which near their home and work place.

The event has come to fruitful and successful end. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the student volunteers from Hang Seng University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Metropolitan University. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the countless support from MTR which help promote the event via their social media network.

Jockey Club Post-diagnostic Support in Dementia Care Programme (PDSP)

Supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trusts, Jockey Club Post-diagnostic Support in Dementia Care Programme (PDSP) staff organized a Zoom webinar for the professional workers on diagnosis and symptom of dementia and the supporting services for the caregivers. We appreciated the participation of over 60 professional workers from different institutions.

We were honoured to have invited Prof. Timothy Kwok, director of JCCPA and professor of Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK to deliver the topic on the importance of early detection of dementia and how to look for dementia in primary care. Prof. Adrian Wong, research assistant professor of Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, CUHK shared the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. And Dr. Kenny Chui, chief training consultant and dementia specialist of JCCPA explained the importance of post-diagnostic support to patients and their caregivers and the impact of distressed behavior through the film of “The Father”.

PDSP programme staff conducted group training sessions for the elderly who lived in the estates under Hong Kong Housing Society in September, including Cho Yiu Chuen and Broadview Garden in Kwai Tsing, Bo Shek Mansion in Tsuen Wan and Prosperous Garden in Yau Ma Tei. The elders can learn dementia knowledge from the training and learn to establish healthy lifestyles in the future.

Advanced Diploma Programme in Dementia Care

Advanced Diploma Programme in Dementia Care has commenced on 9 September, 2021. The programme aims to strengthen students’ knowledge and practical skills so that a higher service quality in dementia care can be attained. There were around 30 students enrolled for each programme. Most of them are professionals like social workers, nurses, podiatrists, occupation therapists from elderly service. The progrramme not only includes the lecture-based pedagogy but also practical learning like agency visit, clinical practice and therapeutic interventions, such as music therapy, aroma therapy, horticultural therapy, expressive art and animal assisted activities. We believed that the programmes can enhance students’ collaborative effort and holistic care by the multidisciplinary intervention.
